Early Reassurance / Dating Scan

Seeing your baby’s heartbeat on an early pregnancy ultrasound is one of the surest indicators that a pregnancy is proceeding as it should. In general, the risk of miscarriage is much lower once the pregnancy has reached this point. But what does it mean if you go in for an ultrasound, and there is no fetal heartbeat? There are a few possible reasons for the absence of a heartbeat on ultrasound. If you have no other symptoms, rechecking with another an ultrasound test in a week is the most common recommendation. A transvaginal ultrasound an ultrasound in which a probe is inserted into your vagina to get better access to your uterus is generally much more accurate than an abdominal ultrasound in early pregnancy. Prior to eight weeks gestation, a transvaginal ultrasound provides by far the best results. Finding a fetal heartbeat on a handheld doppler can take even longer. You may be able to hear a fetal heartbeat with these devices at seven to eight weeks.

During the 5th week we can usually see a small pregnancy sac around 6mm and within it we can usually see a yolk sac. This confirms to us that this is definitely a pregnancy sac.

Even at 6 weeks we sometimes struggle to see the baby and its heart beat even when things are going fine. At 6 weeks the baby measures approx. At 7 weeks the baby can now be clearly seen measuring approx 10mm in length. At this stage we should always see the heart beating in a healthy live pregnancy. Wait one week more for your dating scan and see how much baby changes. At 8 weeks baby now measures 16mm in length and has a clear head and body.

This was a prospective cohort study of first trimester pregnancies. Non-parametric tests and logistic regression models were used for comparisons of distributions and testing of associations. A total of patients were included, of which were singleton pregnancies, 51 were twins, and 2 were triplets total fetuses. Fifty-two patients had 61 losses. We built nomograms with the changes of the parameters evaluated in ongoing, as well as in pregnancy loss. The YS reliably identified the occurrence of a miscarriage at least 7 days prior its occurrence.

CRL and HR became abnormal at a later time in pregnancy and closer to the event. These findings have important implications for patient counseling and care planning, as well as a potential bearing on cost effectiveness within early pregnancy care.
